Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries in Assumption Parish Crash

Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries in Assumption Parish Crash

Pierre Part – On January 7, 2026, shortly before 6:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a serious injury crash involving a bicyclist on Louisiana Highway 1016-2 (Belle River Road) near Cypress Street in Assumption Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 65-year-old Dalton Ackman of Pierre Part.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Ackman was traveling north on LA Hwy 1016-2 in the roadway on a bicycle without the required lighting. For reasons still under investigation, a 2012 Ford F-150 traveling north on LA Hwy 1016-2 struck Ackman with its right side. Following the initial impact, Ackman and his bicycle came to rest in the northbound lane. Ackman was subsequently struck by a 2024 Ford Bronco traveling behind the F-150.

Ackman, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Both drivers were properly restrained and suffered no injuries.

The driver of the F-150 showed no signs of impairment and voluntarily submitted a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected. A standard toxicology sample was collected from Ackman and the driver of the Bronco for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers want to remind bicyclists that Louisiana law classifies bicycles as vehicles, meaning cyclists must adhere to the same traffic laws as motorists. Never assume that a motorist can see you, and remember that it’s important to stay visible by using appropriate lighting and wearing bright or reflective clothing in low-light conditions. Additionally, cyclists are required to ride as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left.
