Tickfaw, LA (March 30, 2026) – A man from Independence died after a secondary crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 55 northbound just south of LA Highway 442 in Tangipahoa Parish.
On Saturday night, March 28, around 11 p.m., emergency units responded to a deadly pedestrian crash on Interstate 55 northbound just south of LA Highway 442. Two separate crashes were reported in the same stretch of roadway, creating a complex scene for responders.
Officials said Austin Gentry, 26, from Independence, had been involved in an earlier crash on the southbound side of I-55. After the first crash and before help arrived, he exited his vehicle and attempted to cross the northbound lanes. As he crossed, he was struck by a northbound vehicle. He was wearing dark-colored clothing in a poorly lit section of the interstate.
Gentry suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not suspected of impairment. No further details have been released.
