Amite, LA (March 26, 2026) – A fatal train crash claimed the life of a 23-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon, March 24, in Amite. The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 51 and Ponders Quarters Lane.
According to reports, an Amtrak train collided with a pickup truck traveling eastbound on Ponders Quarters Lane from Highway 51. Authorities said the truck driver did not see the oncoming train before the collision.
Family members identified the victim as Dorian Batiste of Amite City. He was a passenger in the pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver and one passenger aboard the train were taken to the hospital. Both were later treated and released the same day.
The train, which was carrying 149 passengers, was delayed but resumed its journey by 4:40 p.m. Officials noted that the crossing lacks warning lights and gate arms, though it does have a yield sign and a stop sign.
